Practical Skills Training

For more information, call 0113 274 4270

Skilled staff, working to internationally defined standards, are the hallmark of many successful businesses. This is no less true for electronics manufacturing than for any other industry.

Train your staff based on the recommended standards of the electronics industry more quickly and confidently, reducing design, manufacturing and testing times. Once completed one or more of our practical training courses, staff will become more atuned to deciphering their own errors or mistakes, ensuring that products on the line will never fail.

Supervised training at Electronics Yorkshire

Electronics Yorkshire is the premier training organisation for IPC and skills training. Unique in the UK, our team hold some of the highest training qualifications available and we back up our training with access to world class equipment and technology.

Our electronics skills courses cover the following topics

Introduction to through-hole hand soldering

This one-day introductory course provides basic skills in carrying out hand-soldering as well as enabling staff to recognise and place frequently used components. The knowledge gained is, essentially, understanding and applying soldering techniques and recognising the quality of finished product.

. . . followed by . . .

Advanced through-hole hand soldering (includes reworking techniques)

Over two days this more advanced soldering course will develop the skills and understanding laid down in Electronics Yorkshire’s Introduction to through-hole hand soldering course. The course teaches the knowledge and skills to carry out hand-soldering processes to the highest quality and reliability, and enables staff to recognise and rework faults arising from the standard assembly soldering process.

Introduction to hand soldering of surface mount devices

This one-day introductory course provides basic skills in carrying out hand-soldering for mounting surface mount devices. The knowledge gained is, essentially, understanding and applying soldering techniques and recognising the quality of finished product.

. . . followed by . . .

Advanced hand soldering of surface mount devices (includes reworking techniques)

This two-day course follows on from Electronics Yorkshire’s Introduction to hans soldering surface mount devices (includes reworking techniques) course; although anyone with existing industry experience will also benefit. The knowledge gained will enable staff to work effectively with different processes to solder and remove a range of components.

NEW - Best practice hand soldering and reworking of through-hole and surface mount devices

This one-day course provides practical skills in mounting, removing and replacing surface mount devices. The course is divided up so that, roughly, two hours are spent on plated through hole (PTH) components, three hours on surface mount devices (SMDs) and two hours dedicated to the removal of SMDs.

Cables and Harnesses

Cable terminations and Harness assembly practical skills

This four-day course is essential for anyone working with cables and looms in whatever industry sector and provides practical support to complement the IPC/WHMA-A-620 course. The content is formed around the procedures of cable preparation, hand crimping, soldering terminations and connectors to cable, and includes cables specification and the methods of wrapping cables into the loom, as well as the installation of the loom into products and enclosures.

Storeage and Handling - including ESD on-site and off-site

Understand the dangers of Electro-static Discharge (ESD)

This one-day course ensures staff understand how ESD is the unseen enemy, why it must be eliminated and what steps need to be taken to prevent catastrophe. As portable equipment, such as mobile phones, laptops and tablets, are getting smaller, with more functions being added, the operation voltages for components are becoming much lower. In these circumstances, whether building or repairing such equipment, avoiding the dangers of ESD is essential.

NEW - The hazards of electro-static discharge for field service, technical support and IT staff

This one-day introductory course provides information on how to ensure that an ESD area is set up prior to fault finding on a product in the field.

NEW - Handling and storing PCBs and moisture sensitive components

This one-day introductory course provides information on how to ensure that PCB's are correctly in accordance with RoHS compliance regulations.

Introducing non-technical staff to electronics

Introduction to Electronics for non-technical staff

This one-day course is an excellent way to introduce new and non-technical staff, such as accounts, sales, administration, stores procurement and purchasing staff, to the ‘mysteries’ of electronics. Starting with the printed board, we demonstrate what certain components do and why they need to go where they do; how to recognise different components and the industry jargon that goes with them. At the end of the day everyone gets the chance to build a working device to take away with them.

Training those who train others

Training a Trainer – one or two-day theory/practical soldering course

Whether you are a trainer, team leader, supervisor or anyone needing to pass on skills, knowledge or information to colleagues this training in soldering course will prove invaluable. Electronics Yorkshire’s Training a trainer course uses hand soldering as the medium for delivery, but the aspects learnt will help anyone train other staff in an efficient and cost-effective way, be they full time, part time or temporary.
