Soldering to Industrial Standards - three-day skills course
Occasional shortcuts and ‘make-dos’ can often become the routine method for even the most experienced staff, and simple errors can lead to catastrophic and expensive failures. That’s why this three-day Industrial Standard Soldering course is as useful for experienced staff as it is for new-comers to the industry.
This course could also become part of your company’s induction programme, fast-tracking skills acquisition for manufacturing and production personnel.
Course overview
The course provides the knowledge and skills to carry out hand-soldering processes as well as enabling staff to recognise and rework any faults relating to the standard assembly soldering process. The knowledge gained is, essentially, understanding and applying soldering techniques, recognition of soldering faults, the ability to rectify them and a thorough understanding of the quality of finished product.
The regular techniques of soldering are explained, along with the need for and application of flux. Typical faults are identified and methods of rectifying them are explained. Types of PCB finishes are discussed and used on the practical element of the course, whilst different types of soldering irons and stations are also covered. All of this detail ensures that each student receives a broad range of experiences.
The course, which includes practical work, covers the following topics:
-
Soldering Iron types and usages
-
ESD implications of soldering
-
Types of PCB finishes
-
Solder types and composition
-
Flux types and usage
-
Basic soldering techniques with conventional and surface mount chip components
-
Component Identification
-
Component removal
-
Identification of soldering faults
-
Rectification of soldering faults
-
Soldering to IPC J-Standard
The skills learnt on this course conform to the IPC J-Std-001.
Assessments at the end of the areas covered will result in an Electronics Yorkshire certificate being awarded to candidates who achieve the required standard. Within this programme students will also be able to take an IPC course of study and receive the IPC Hand Soldering for Through-Hole Components DVD-42/43C certificate – an industry-recognised hand soldering certification for operators and assembly technicians. The IPC programme is divided into five sections: Preparation; Materials; Soldering; Cleaning; and Workmanship Standards; and includes pretesting, section review questions, and a final certification test to ensure that participants understand and retain the required background knowledge for hands-on training.
