Practical Skills Training for the Electronics Industry
Skilled staff, working to internationally defined standards, are the hallmark of many a successful business; and this is no less true for electronics manufacturing than for any other industry. Such staff work more quickly and confidently, reducing design, manufacturing or testing times. They produce fewer errors, saving money on scrap or rework, and the quality of your product improves. Really, this is a 'win-win' - better products for less money!
Electronics Yorkshire Training is the premier training organisation for IPC and skills training. Unique in the UK, our team hold some of the highest training qualifications available, and we back up our training with access to world class equipment and technology.
Our electronics skills courses cover the following topics:
Soldering to Industrial Standards
Occasional shortcuts and ‘make-dos’ can often become the routine method for even the most experienced staff, and simple errors can lead to catastrophic and expensive failures. This course provides the knowledge and skills to carry out hand-soldering processes. In addition, students learn to recognise and rework faults that may arise in production. It could also become part of a company’s induction programme, fast-tracking skills acquirement for manufacturing and production personnel.
Surface Mount Devices (SMD) Reworking
It is important that staff who are involved in the rework of PCBs know how to replace surface mount components successfully – getting it right first time, every time; this course provides students with the practical skills needed for the reworking of such surface-mounted devices. This course explores the use of a range of soldering processes including hot air, infra-red and solder paste and, when hand soldering, using different gauges of solder wire, enabling staff to achieve the correct volume of solder to deposit on the component pad.
Advanced Surface Mount Technology (ASMT) Reworking
Staff involved with the rework of components need more than a basic knowledge of how to handle surface mount devices, and this course provides students with the practical skills needed for the reworking of such surface-mounted connections. This course provides students with the practical skills required to rework small and complex surface-mounted devices, including those with many legs or pads, and quad flat packs with no leads (QFN). X-ray equipment and specialist optical devices are all made available for students to use.
Ball Grid Array (BGA), Chip Scale Package (CSP) and QFN (Quad Flat-packs) Reworking
Increasingly BGAs, CSPs and QFNs are becoming essential components in the production of electronic devices but frequently staff are unsure how to rework these, often very expensive, components with confidence. On this course candidates learn the complex skills involved in the placement and inspection of BGA and CSP devices. Details of PCB preparation, alignment, insertion, and process controls are covered, along with reballing techniques. Optical and X-Ray inspection techniques are also taught using the centre's advanced inspection equipment.
Cable Terminations and Harness Assembly
This course is essential for anyone working with cables and looms in whatever industry sector and provides practical support to complement the IPC/WHMA-A-620 course. The content is formed around the procedures of cable preparation, hand crimping, soldering terminations and connectors to cable, and includes cables specification and the methods of wrapping cables into the loom, as well as the installation of the loom into products and enclosures.
Introduction to Electronics for non-technical staff
This one-day course is an excellent way to introduce new and non-technical staff, such as accounts, sales, administration, stores procurement and purchasing staff, to the ‘mysteries’ of electronics. Starting with the printed board, we demonstrate what certain components do and why they need to go where they do; how to recognise different components and the industry jargon that goes with them. At the end of the day everyone gets the chance to build a working device to take away with them.
Understand the Dangers of Electro-static Discharge (ESD)
This one-day course ensures staff understand how ESD is the unseen enemy, why it must be eliminated and what steps need to be taken to prevent catastrophe. As portable equipment, such as mobile phones, laptops and tablets, are getting smaller, with more functions being added, the operation voltages for components are becoming much lower. In these circumstances, whether building or repairing such equipment, avoiding the dangers of ESD is essential.
Centre facilities
Electronics Yorkshire has a vast array of specialist equipment within the advanced Training and Technology Centre, complementing the many training courses on offer. As well as for training, the equipment can also be used by companies for investigation, analysis and testing purposes.
